The Local Area - Crawley

Evidence indicates Crawley’s history dates back as far as the Bronze Age. Later, both Iron Age and Roman settlements were established here, based around ore extraction and ironworking.

Much more recently the New Towns Act (1946) was passed to provide homes and jobs outside of London, which had become overcrowded. Crawley was selected for development into one of eight new towns lying in a circle between 20 and 30 miles from the heart of the capital. Crawley new town was substantially completed by1962 and had a thriving population of around 60 000 in ten neighbourhoods.

Since then Crawley has expanded and now consists of 13 neighbourhoods with a population of around 100 000. With future proposals for a 14th neighbourhood, Crawley is the largest inland town in West Sussex.
